EXCERPT:

Glancing up, I suck my breath in when I find dark eyes connected to mine, eyes so dark they’re almost black, and the energy in them is enough to freeze me in place.

A boy is attached to the dark gaze.

A man.

He’s probably no more than twenty or twenty-one, but everything about him screams man.  There’s no boy in him.  That part of him is very clearly gone.  I see it in his eyes, in the way he holds himself, in the perceptive way he takes in his surroundings, then stares at me with singular focus, like we’re somehow connected by a tether.  He’s got a million contradictions in his eyes….aloofness, warmth, mystery, charm, and something else I can’t define.

He’s muscular, tall, and wearing a tattered black sweatshirt that says Irony is lost on you in orange letters.  His dark jeans are belted with black leather, and a silver band encircles his middle finger.

Dark hair tumbles into his face and a hand with long fingers impatiently brushes it back, all the while his eyes are still connected with mine.  His jaw is strong and masculine, with the barest hint of stubble.

His gaze is still connected to mine, like a livewire, or a lightning bolt.  I can feel the charge of it racing along my skin, like a million tiny fingers, flushing my cheeks.  My lungs flutter and I swallow hard.

And then, he smiles at me.

At me.

Because I don’t know him and he doesn’t know better.

When I first saw Nocte show up on promo blogs and emails, I had to get my hands on a copy. I have fallen in love with Courtney Cole’s writing style and this series pushed the envelope for both her reads and herself. I will warn you that this series is full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more.

We meet Calley Price and learn right away that she shares a very strong bound with her twin Finn. Their bond is even stronger than most, as these 2 have been forced to live in a world that looks at them differently. Living in a small town is hard enough, but living in a funeral home doesn’t help matters. Calley is around death from a very young age and as she has seen far too often it hits her family. Calley is faced with a tremendous amount guilt after being on the phone with her mom the moment her world changed forever.

Calley sees the world in different shades of colors…………..Green is alive and Red means dangerous. Finn sees the world in completely opposite of his twin and comes alive to what is real in the dark of night. Being so different from one another is what makes these two a the other half of one another. Where one lacks, they are able to be picked up by the other. This is evident time and time again with the fact that we get alternate POV’s between both Finn and Calley.

Out of no where walks a tall, dark and mysterious male named Adair DuBray and he captures the attention of Calley from the first second she lands on his black eyes. Before she can even decide what to do he is gone and Calley focus returns to her brother. The problem is that Dare seems to have gotten into her head and she feels like she knows him and he invades her dreams. Dare continues to cross paths with Calley and over a few meetings they strike up conversation which seems to come so naturally between them. Calley struggles with this connection and fears that she can’t give herself when Finn needs her so badly.

Fate………………….takes things into its control and forces Calley to see that Dare is someone that she needs in her world to be help anchor her. It becomes evident that Dare is surrounded in a cloud of mystery that Calley can’t quite understand. The come to an understanding they they both have secrets and that over time they might be able to tackle them together. 20 Questions becomes their game and it brings to the surface of Calley’s world emotions she didn’t know exist, but she finds the connection stronger with each passing night. As the days pass we see the world in which Calley lives begin to change and the secrets in her world begin to pull at the seams of what is real and what has become a facade hiding the truth.

“I wake up in the night wanting you. I dream about you. But right now, you’re tied up in a lot of painful, hard things. I need to make sure that you really want me. I’m willing to be patient and find out. So my question is, can you be patient and wait, too?”

The real question becomes when the motion stops and the blur clears will Calley be able to handle the secret that could crush her?

“I’m doing this for you. To protect you. There are things you don’t know. You can’t know, not right now. I love you Calla. I do. But you’ve got to trust me.”

We are left at the end of the story with one secret at the surface and another one on the horizon. I can’t wait to find out what his hidden behind those dark obsidian eyes.

My Dare

NOCTE Synopsis:

SAVE ME AND I’LL SAVE YOU….

My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole.
My other half– my twin brother, my Finn– is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me.
He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won’t either.

HeadshotABOUT COURTNEY COLE:

Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
