Author: S.L. Schiefer

Release Date: January 17, 2014

Genre: New Adult

Synopsis

I’m Devon Harper and there are only two certainties in my life:

1. I live to dance.

2. I’m a prostitute.

Do you know when your life is suddenly turned upside down? Setting in action a sequence of events, you never saw coming.

That’s what happened to me. My story is not a pretty one, nor is it your typical love story.

My world was rocked at 18 and again three years later.

My life is a series of let downs. The only constant in my life is dance. When unlikely ally, Enzo, enters my messed up life I start to believe that just maybe there’s hope for me yet. Trying to get a degree in dance and get out of prostitution might leave me with more to lose than before.

Ok just call me sick and messed up in the head. This was a hard one for me to rate as I kept wanting to say “Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew” and throw my kindle of the window. But… I pushed through it with lots of mental breaks and since I read on the train I had to poke my head up once in a while and make sure no one was reading over my shoulder and thinking “WTF is she reading?!?” lol

Since we don’t do half Bean ratings I rounded up to 4 stars. Be WARNED this book is nothing fluffy! Honestly I’m confused that this book is classified as New Adult because the NA part was very small. It had a very small part of it in the beginning as the book was almost struggling to trick you into believing into rainbows and cute little puppies before it took you on a hair-ripping trip through all the lines of humanity. This book does not pull any punches and doesn’t shy away from any wrongs, taboos or indecency. This book took me to so many hard limits & cringe worthy moments, which makes me think that I’m not the one who needs therapy but the author because MY GOD! WHY? WHY?????!!!???

I also wonder how many snuff films she went through to come up with this. If it came out of her head you will have to excuse me if I take a detour around her table at an book signing event (said with my love).

This book is told through several POV in first person narration and we get not just H/h, but couple of secondary characters which really are also main characters as they play a major role in the plot line & round up the story to it’s nice messed up package* (Really I enjoyed the read! I stand by my rating but this one needs a heavy dose of warning.)

Our Heroine, Devone, has got to the unluckiest person in the world! She is born into a life of prostitution as her mother was one & died one and because of that Devone was forced to “take her place”.

“You try enjoying, or even faking that enjoyment, while a man thirty years older than you is pounding into you and all you feel is his beer gut hitting you first. Preventing him from getting deep enough to hit the right spot„

She fights hard to stay normal by attending college and pursuing her naive dreams of leaving the prostitution ring she is part of. As a reader it just makes you shake your head. I mean REALLY? The things she is forced to witness and take part in her ‘profession’, as well as PUNISHMENT that is forced on her to keep her in line. SMH

Her pimp is nothing but awful and if you think he just slaps her around a bit….

I’ll let your imagination run wild on this punishment but believe me *cough* snuff films *cough*… and this book just keeps picking up pace in the dark territory going light-speed from New Adult territory straight into blackhole dark genre. Devon’s life gets harder and messed up as she finds attraction in Enzo, a cop with a promise of pulling her out of her life but as soon as she takes the step  towards her freedom she gets yanked back. What she didn’t know in her 21 years of existence is that there are even more nefarious influences in her life that decided that it’s time that Devon will pay for her ‘sins’.

This pull into dark of her life where all her limits and strength gets tested part of the book (which is about halfway) almost had me calling QUITS! I wanted to safeword out of reading  but I kept pushing through it and made it out!!! I think what made this read harder is that where Devon was only suppose to find abhorrence in her treatment during her captivity by those nefarious people, she didn’t… not all the the time.

This book truly messed me up and it was a crazy ride but I’m glad I made it. It was a first for me where a book crossed SO many lines AND stayed in the dark genre (in my definition). This is NOT a love story, but it does have HEA & resolution so…

… if you are up to challenge to take on this book… Do it & Godspeed!
