To Chuito the apartment was a self-imposed prison for a lifetime of sins. To Alaine, the girl next door, it was salvation from her overbearing, religious father.

He was a devil.
She was an angel.

Two people who should’ve never met, let alone become friends, but it’s not until they give into the dangerous passion that’s been simmering under the surface for five years that things go to hell.

On the outside, Chuito ‘The Slayer’ Garcia is on top of the world. He’s successful. He’s wealthy. He’s a champion MMA fighter surrounded by friends who support him, but they don’t know what he was before he came to Garnet.

A gangster.
A thief.
An addict.
A murderer.

Now his past is churning up demons he can’t ignore. Chuito knows he needs to go back to Miami to end it, but there’s something holding him back, a single temptation he can’t resist before leaving.

Alaine.

She’s the one drug he can’t give up…even if it destroys them both.

“To me you’re coke. Fine. Smooth. Perfectly white. Very bad for me, but so fucking sexy I don’t give a shit. It’s worth going down for.” – Chuito Garcia

Hi Kele! Thank you for taking the time to answer some of the questions for Kris & Vik Book Therapy Cafe book blog and our followers! Congratulations on the new release… that story we have waited on (at least me) since Battered Hearts Series. We got a peek of Chuito ‘The Slayer’ Garcia through all the books and we finally get to meet the “Original” OG.

  • Not that I mind getting to know Chuito’s cousin Marcos first as he is yyyyyummy… but why did he get the honor of opening this spin-off series? What made Chuito take a backseat to the story line? To me I think of it as even more preparation into the world that Chuito grew up in… am I warm or completely Arctic cold on this theory?

Hrm, well, actually he started out as a little side project for Loose Id’s Missed Connection anthology (which is very fun, you should check it out if you liked the Missed Connections theme in Viper) and I thought. . . . I want to set it in Garnet, but I needed side characters. So I created Marcos and pulled Katie from an obscure reference from Star Crossed.

Then, as I started writing the story. . . I liked it too much to have it as just a 30K short story and asked my publisher if I could turn it into a full length instead and make it the first book in the Untamed Hearts series.

I believe some things are just meant to be and Marcos was one of them. . . His story was the perfect one to open the series. A little shorter. A little lighter. It was a good introduction to the world, because as you know the series gets rapidly darker and grittier after Marcos and Katie’s love story.

  • While writing Chuito’s story… did he annoy you with anything? Does the man have any bad habits besides bossy alpha?

Um, you know, I can’t think of anything that annoyed me about him. I enjoy writing Chuito quite a bit. He’s very stoic. He’s not quite as chatty or flashy as some of the other heroes in this series, but I like that about him. He’s very alpha, but he doesn’t need to announce it. He just knows and everyone else around him does too.

But, the timeline of his story annoyed me. . . Pulling that together was VERY difficult as a lot of it ties into the Battered Hearts books and making it flow for readers who hadn’t read those books, it was all very tricky. I believe I succeeded, but I still think for a better reader experience the Battered Hearts books should be read beforehand. At least 2 and 3 in the Battered Hearts series because their timelines cross The Slayer.

  • If you weren’t happily married and had an option of any of your written men, which one would you choose and why.

Probably Nova, even if loving him is sort of a hazard. I like a man with a big…brain.

  • Do you write in characters from your daily interactions? Do they know that you write them in and how do they feel about it? If I remember correctly Jules is a real person and if she is like our Jules please bring her to an event 🙂

Jules is based on a real life person. The others, I can see elements of people I know in them in this strange mishmash. Like Nova who has a very sardonic, very dry sense of humor that reminds me of my husband.

My husband and I used to own a Cuban restaurant so elements of Hal’s is based on that experience and there are a million tiny little things from my life that are in there. I’m ADD and Tino is ADHD. Though I haven’t said that in the books, it’s fairly obvious and I am crazy excited to be writing my first ADHD hero.
But, no, Jules is the only one I can point to and say. . . Yeah, that’s just her. I actually started writing her on accident, just subconsciously she came out. Jules walked into Hal’s in this stylish business suit that first time, with these big sunglasses on her head, all bossy and in her element commanding a man’s world and then I pulled back and thought. . . Oh, shit, I just stole her and I had to call my friend and ask permission to keep writing her as she was.

Fortunately, she LOVES being known as the real life Jules and her real life adventures will often times keep my FB entertaining.

  • Do you have any special rituals you go through when you start writing a new book?

Um, I think my only steadfast ritual is this constant attempt to find time. If I can grab a cup of coffee and run off to hide somewhere and write. . . I’m a happy girl.

With Slayer and with Viper I was lucky to escape for a while to my friend Lori Toland’s house and write in total peace and quiet, but that doesn’t always happen.

  • What does your writing cave look like? (picture maybe?)

I have no writing cave.  It’s wherever I can find peace. I write on a laptop. I’ve been known to go to Disney and write. I go to coffee shops. Show up at friends’ houses. Real life Jules has a beach condo. It’s often empty and I will go and write there when she’s not renting it and like I said, Lori Toland has put me up more than once. Right now, I’ve been going downstairs during the day and hiding in my oldest son’s bachelor pad in the garage to write. I’d take a picture, but the last time I went down there his bed had turned into a graveyard for Girl Scout cookie boxes.

  • What is one author you met at the signing or want to meet that you are a fan of? What is your favorite book by them?

My favorite authors I’ve met at a signing? Probably Tiffany Snow and Paige Weaver. We met at Book Bash and we’ve been tight ever since. I like ALL their books. Seriously. You should check them both out!!

  • Fun Question 1… in your quest to make the story authentic did you ever find yourself googling something so ridiculous?

OMG! Hopefully no one ever looks at my google searches. I have googled a crazy number of strange things. Pages and pages on mafia stuff. Endless hours researching organized crime. I’ve listened to hours of people talking from different locations, dialect and stuff. I have researched SO MUCH when it comes to drugs I’m sure I’m on a big brother database. I always thought, when I first started out as an author, that due to my ADD I’d be a bad researcher, but it turns out I’m a really good researcher as long as I’m interested in my subject.

I also ::cough:: spend a lot of time on tumblr looking for inspiration of a different nature.

  • Fun Question 2… if you read while writing, what do you read? What are you reading now?

I do not read while writing. I don’t want to accidently mimic someone else’s voice so I don’t read any fiction when I’m writing, though I will make an exception to beta read for a friend and then take a day off from writing afterwards. The last thing I read was by crit-partner Laurann Dohner and she always keeps me entertained!!

About Author

Kele MoonA freckle faced, redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives off pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it she’s lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who had infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven he’s usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts–They wouldn’t have it any other way.
