Synopsis v2

A thrilling, seductive new series from New York Timesbestselling author Sarah J. Maas, blending Beauty and the Beastwith faerie lore.

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it… or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

Perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R. R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down!

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Since I did listen to the audio book let’s begin there. This book is narrated by Jennifer Ikeda and while I loved her voice and especially loved her performance towards the end of the book I found that for the beginning of the book and some of the less action intense portions her voice was at times too soothing. I enjoy listening to audio books primarily while driving and found that I had to switch it off and turn on music at the end of the day because I didn’t want to fall asleep at the wheel. With that said I would be lying if I said that her performance took away from the beautiful prose of this book. It did not & I will certainly listen to book 2 even if it is narrated by her again.

Now on to the important stuff… as stated in the synopsis this book is a combination of fairie lore and Beauty and the Beast, not to be confused with a retelling of Beauty and the Beast as this story is definitely far more adult, violent, and at times quite sexy and with the added fairy tale elements greatly more complex.

Sarah J. Maas always does a wonderful job with building her worlds and developing her characters and this book/series is starting off in that same light. Feyre is a strong woman that most of us that have or do work hard to provide for our families/selves can relate too. She’s been dealt a crap hand in life has a family that is in many ways ungrateful of her sacrifices and her future looks bleak at best. While Tamlin appears from the outside to have it all when the two cross paths you learn that nothing is what it seems in his world. Once they make their way down the rabbit hole we are introduced to some genuinely wonderful side kicks and some characters that you love to hate as well.

If you enjoy your books with some sexy times you will get a taste of that in this one. There are a few fade to black scenes but one in particular is so intense that the passion is palpable. If you enjoy well developed characters and fantasy worlds that are complex and grand then this is the read for you.
