The Brightest Sunset (The Darkest Sunrise Duet, #2)

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
More lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

The sun still hung bright in the sky, but midnight fell all the same. And, in that moment, I feared I’d never escape it again.
The darkness was going to be my executioner.
It was going to crush me, suffocate me, and then devour me.

The Brightest Sunrise picks up exactly where The Darkest Sunset left off. If you read the first part of this duet, then you know just how crazy things ended. I don’t want to give any part of the story away. You seriously are going to have to just experience this duet on your own, and what an experience it was. I sobbed like a freaking baby while reading both books. It rips your heart open wide and puts it back together all at once. So, remember to keep those tissues at hand.

‘I’d offered him my deepest, darkest secrets. And he’d taken them, devoured them, and made them his own. He made the darkness a beautiful place filled with understanding and acceptance’

Porter was such an amazing character. He was a loving and devoted father who would go to the ends of the earth to protect his family. I had a lot of respect for this man and you’ll see why falling for him was not hard at all. I just loved him so much.

Charlotte surprised me quite a bit in this book. She really showed how strong she really is despite everything she has been through. I will admit I was upset with her for a while in the beginning of the book, but I was so happy when she realized the error of her ways.

‘When I broke, Porter was there to pick up the pieces. And, when Porter lost sight of the light, I was there to hold him in the darkness.’

This book was a whirlwind of emotions and drama. There was the bad and ugly but also the beautiful and sweet. There was some nail-biting angst and also moments of peace and love. Aly Martinez is a wonderful writer and she continues to prove it with each book that she releases. I could seriously not put this book down, I just had to keep reading. I loved how well Porter and Charlotte worked together, they just melted my heart. I really wanted them both to finally win after they lost so much in their lives. I highly recommend you give this duet a read, you won’t regret it.

Meli Mel’s REVIEW of The Darkest SunriseHERE

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
