Wild Card is a standalone novel and the first book in the North Ridge Trilogy about rough and rugged Canadian mountain men, the Nelson brothers. Canada’s never felt so hot.

She swore she’d never go back home.

She swore she’d never see the man who broke her all those years ago.

But you don’t always get to choose your path.

And sometimes that path is as wild and rugged as the heart.

Rachel Waters thought she saw the last of the small mountain town of North Ridge, British Columbia, when she left six years ago. But while her advertising career blossomed beneath the skyscrapers of Toronto, her mother’s sudden illness has the 26-year old returning to North Ridge to care for her, putting her career on hold while dealing with family secrets, regrets and unresolved goodbyes.

Shane Nelson has always been a bit of a wild card. The youngest of three brothers, Shane’s spent most of his life being underestimated and misunderstood. With his quiet intensity, classic good looks and thoughtful demeanor, he’s an enigma on horseback, managing his father’s sprawling ranch on the slopes of North Ridge.

But while Shane remains the quintessential brooding cowboy, complete with an arsenal of inner demons, all of that changes when Rachel steps back into his life.

She was the girl he pushed away.

Now she’s the girl who wishes she could leave.

Despite the odds, Shane will do everything to convince Rachel he needs a second chance that he doesn’t deserve but when the two of them head off into the wilderness together in search of lost cattle, more than just their hearts are at stake.

Whether it’s love or lives on the line, one thing is for sure: always bet on the wild card.

As an avid reader, I have 2 types of favorite authors that I usually follow. One which delivers the same plot formula and that’s exactly what I crave when I’m feeling in a certain mood. The second type is the one that always experiments and delivers something new with each book published. Karina Halle falls into the second type of author for me. I have enjoyed her light romances, scary ‘romances’, and ‘take a chance on me’ romances.

REVIEW: WILD CARD by Karina Halle

Constantly stalking Karina on her IG as she posts all the beauty that is her native Canada so it made total sense for her to write a book about it. When I wasn’t lost in the heartbreaking second chance romance of Shane and Rachel, I was imagining all the beauty that Canada has to offer in a small town surrounded by woods and scary bears. Bears aside, I would in a heartbeat drop everything and move in with Shane and help him keep his family’s ranch going.

That may not be how Rachel feels when she is forced to return to her home town where she lost her heart… or got it smashed to bits… whichever, both apply! Where Shane can do no wrong in my eyes (as it is told in POV, so I know he is a good guy at heart), that is completely the opposite for Rachel. There is too much hurt chased by nightmares of growing up in her household. So I totally understood her reluctance to give it another go or even let go of the hurt. However, such is life where not everything as it appears to be. Especially where there are dark secrets that are just waiting to resurface.

It’s a shift.

It’s a bookmark sliding in the middle of a novel where the hero’s world is blown apart.

Everything that happens before that page is the before.

Everything that happens after is the rest of the hero’s life.

This moment is the dividing moment, where a world is halved in two and there’s no turning the pages back.

I loved the secondary characters A LOT! I’m not sure how Shane’s brothers will beat his sweetness and hotness but I think they can totally do it. After all, he is the baby of the household, he has to have learned it somewhere, right? I can not wait to see what Karina has in store for all of us next.

“What feeds your soul?”

“What feeds my soul?”

“You heard me. What feeds it? What gets you up in the mornings? What makes you want to be a better version of yourself, to keep on growing? What makes you feel alive? More than that, what makes you want to be alive forever, finding the lust and the joy for it day by day?” She pauses. “Now change that around. Not what, but who? Who feeds your soul?”

  1. I definitely should read more of this author. I read one of her books years ago, but I think it was one of those “scary” ones because it just was way too dark for my liking. But this one sounds delightful. What are some of your favorites from hers that I should try out?

    • Kris and Vik

Yeah the series she started off with is Experiment In Terror… probably not for everyone.
Hm… I love all of her books so it’s hard for me to say which one to start off with. She always does something different. I loved her Love In English because I love Spain and I read this few months after coming back from my last trip. If you are a music lover I highly recommend Rocked Up which she co-wrote with her hubster and they BOTH have very strong music background so it’s legit. Some really good feels with slow burn is Before I Ever Met You.
The Lie, The Offer, The Pact are all the same universe although completely standalone and KH even made sure no one groups them together as a series.
Her traditionally published stuff like Racing the Sun, Where Sea Meets Sky (this one is about the brother of MC in Love, In English, but totally standalone) is like an adventure of world travel and 20s angst and finding yourself.
I love that she doesn’t do the overly drama for sake of drama but ACTUAL life struggles and identity issues and life purpose we all sort of struggle with in 20s. What’s best way to stalk you to see which one you will decide on? – Vik

      • oh all of these recommendations sound great, I will have to choose 🙂 I do love authors that deal with real life struggles though.

Best way to stalk me especially when it comes to books is Goodreads. 🙂
