After spending four years caring for her mother, twenty-two year old Evie Crane is starting over with a new job in a new city. Unfortunately, her new life involves working for a woman with close ties to the mob. When a short walk home turns into tragedy and Evie is left broken and beaten, a mob hitman comes to her rescue. In his debt, she feels a bond to him and wants to help him as much as he helped her, but getting close to a criminal brings her more chaos than she bargains for.
Declan Lewis grew up on the streets until taken under the wing of a man with a soft spot for a child he never had. The man taught Declan all he knew, only…all he knew was being a hired killer for the Dantes family. When Declan crosses paths with a girl so unlike himself, he can’t help but be attracted to his polar opposite. However, bringing her into his life means bringing her into his world, a mistake that might prove fatal. He wants to be the man she deserves, but to give her what she needs, he’ll have to change. And is change really possible for a killer?
Wow… This book…. Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve read a mob affiliated book, and let me just tell you I’ve freaking missed it. This was definitely a great book to come back to when coming off a mobster dry spell. I loved everything about this book. How dark and gritty it was. How amazing the lead characters were. Declan and Evie were just all things amazing. For every rough edge Declan had, Evie had her own soft lines.
What I loved most about this book was how Evie only saw the good in Declan, which is something so few people have every shown him. Declan is a prickly SOB, and doesn’t make it easy to let Evie in. But she is a patient little whip of a thing and waits him out. And he is so thankful for that in the end. Throughout the book both characters battle right from wrong, good from bad, lightness in darkness, but in the end love always prevails and wins.
Once I started this book it was very hard to stop. I cursed work for getting in the way of my reading time. My family went hungry a few nights and every spare minute I had was dedicated to this book. I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a Dark Knight to come and keep you safe from the boogie man and make sure there’s nothing wicked hiding in your closet.
