This is my first read from this very talented author. A lot of her books have been on my TBR list for some time now and after reading this gem I will definitely be moving those other ones up on my reading list. This is the story of young love. Harley and Rose have been BFFs since they were 5 and his family moved in next door to hers. It was friendship at first sight and for little Rose it was love at first sight. Little Rose has been harboring a crush on her best friend since the day they met. She had their wedding planned down to the flowers, month, and clothes all before she was in middle school. Of course, like most men, Harley is a little slow on the news and doesn’t realize how much his Rose means to him until high school. They share a magical, whirlwind love that much like anything good in life, can’t last forever.
I have been wanting to read an angsty book for a few weeks now and boy was this book filled with it. But much like moody teenagers the mood swings can be a little exhausting at times. Harley made me so damn mad during some of those “dumb” moments but I’m so glad I stayed with the book and saw it through. It was magic and lovely and man did it have me sobbing like a baby into my Ben and Jerry’s half pint. No amount of chocolate, Ice cream, or booze could heal my heart when you find out the real reason Harley has been acting like such a douche. Damn you Harley!!!
I loved the writing style of this book, I loved how you got bits and pieces of their childhood every other chapter and you moved forward with them during the other chapters. It kept things interesting and I was always wanting more! I recommend this story to anyone who wants to stay with the lost boys in the never land where we never have to grow up.
He doesn’t make it five yards before the truck slams to a stop, its red taillights hovering, taunting me in the early SF morning. He isn’t moving, but I’m on autopilot. One step, two steps, my feet swallow the ground between us, and then he’s out of the truck, catching me up in his big arms as I wrap myself around him and smash my lips down on his, kissing him in a way that the parentals probably wished they weren’t privy to.
When our kisses return to gentle sorrowful pecks I pull back and whisper, “I love you, Pan.”
“Wendy, my Wendy,” he says breathlessly. “You wait for me. You wait for me or I’m going to come back and gut the asshole who takes my place.”
“No one ever could take your place,” I tell him. He nods, setting me on my feet and smoothing the hair back from my forehead.
