From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren’s (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You / Hating You) new romance.

Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.

For months Holland Bakker has invented excuses to descend into the subway station near her apartment, drawn to the captivating music performed by her street musician crush. Lacking the nerve to actually talk to the gorgeous stranger, fate steps in one night in the form of a drunken attacker. Calvin Mcloughlin rescues her, but quickly disappears when the police start asking questions.

Using the only resource she has to pay the brilliant musician back, Holland gets Calvin an audition with her uncle, Broadway’s hottest musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until his reason for disappearing earlier becomes clear: he’s in the country illegally, his student visa having expired years ago.

Seeing that her uncle needs Calvin as much as Calvin needs him, a wild idea takes hold of her. Impulsively, she marries the Irishman, her infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves and Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway—in the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting—will Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

I think I have been having a fantastic year of reading great books! I took many chances on some new-new or highly-recommended-new-to-me authors this year and thankfully all have panned out. For example, Christina Lauren writing duo were always the authors I wanted to read. I even own numerous of their books either on kindle and/or paperback. I guess this year was the year I would actually read their FABULOUS writing.

I have fallen in love with the book from page one. Perhaps I see myself as the main character, Holland, or perhaps the writing is so relevant to a New Yorker like me. Yep, the book features heavily the Broadway/Musical scene and the artistic side that New York tries to feed while at the same time over-saturated with all the talent. Which is exactly where our main character finds herself… standing in a train station falling in love with an insanely talented busker.

Their love story is very unique because it starts off with a fake marriage to help Calvin, the busker, and in some way also help Holland find herself.

The 3rd character that is featured prominently in this book is Calvin’s Irish accent. So if you enjoy your books audibly I recommend going that route.

Although characters are in their late 20s it is a coming of age story… or coming of adulthood story. In the last 10% I was a sobbing mess of emotions and completely in love with characters that unfortunately do not exist in real life. A perfect book for a romance lover who enjoys the characters to be a little complicated.

  1. I do love complex characters and I was on the shelf about this one since I wasn’t quite sure about this one but now I know that I need to grab this one up. I do like coming of age books, its the closest I get to reading YA hehe Lovely review darling.
